It comes with the territory of working as an academic in a university, and I expect to do it much of the time. Troubling Trends in Organizational Networks

For all the talk about networks and knowledge sharing, it appears many organizations aren’t practicing it. In the middle of 2008, a notice appeared on the Informal Learning blog (informl.com) requesting participation in a survey of informal and Web 2.0 learning practices. A total of 235 responded. The results of the survey served as a catalyst for asking questions rather than proof of what’s going on. They are not tending their networks.

In Work Teams, I had included: share problems, co-coach, assist, brainstorm effectively, continuous feedback, welcome contributions, learn from mistakes, align with mission, narrate work, champion diversity, and measure improvement. In addition to the connecting tasks, we see several overarching types of behaviors.

In the course of the conversation it occurred to me that given the model we propose, that you can’t just have the broader social network create it, and you can’t even really build a community of practice (CoP).

I see employees experiencing less ‘training’ As I’ve said, effective training is expensive when done properly, and should be used only when significant skill shifts are needed. Employees would be tightly coupled to their work teams, and more loosely coupled to their communities of practice. This is the vision of the Coherent Organization.

One of the things to do with models is use them as the basis to explain and predict. There are three layers: work teams composed of members from different communities of practice, that are connected outward to broader social networks. An important element is the flow of information within the model; ensuring that there are no barriers to making effective choices. And of course they should share their learnings back with the community.
