While I cannot profess that L&D/OD specialists can change the nature of management, I can say that well-informed and skilled professionals from this field can enable an organization to empower its employees and management to acquire those skills that will get them to use the social technologies with greater efficacy.

Perhaps the highest level of learning with the deepest cognitive impact is informal learning. It’s what we call those precious learning moments where passion and curiosity meet to break all motivation and knowledge barriers. Informal learning is a great outlet for reflective practice or experiential learning.

The more I thought about it, the more it seemed to me that it is one of the fundamental blocks of building a community of practice. A community grows around a domain where practitioners share their insights, knowledge and doubts, the work processes. Explicit and tacit knowledge gets shared.

We need practical ways to build personal informal networks. Helping groups learn from mistakes and errors, practices to carry over learnings from project to project and improve corporate memory. Open space methods, creating forums and 'Ba' for trusted exchanges, blogging and informal wikis may help.

While the former reflects the redesigning of workplace as a physical manifestation of this change with its focus on enabling communities and collaboration, the second one squarely focuses on empowering autonomous learning and facilitating the building of trusted networks.
