If I notice Im losing someones attention in class, Ill instantly make direct eye-contact, maybe raise an eyebrow, and start talking directly to that student, and most of the time. Im the same when teaching face-to-face -- big user of the laugh to create connection. There are many VoIP tools that allow sending video as well as audio.

There are great tools with a short learning curve (for example, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Presenter) and tools with a longer learning curve that are really excellent (for example, Lectora, and Flashform). For instance, dont show a detailed animation and have text on the screen with an audio narration. So its interesting to think about this underadditive effect where "total brain activation goes down" if presenting in both visual and auditory at the same time. I dont think the answer is to only show a visual, or only have audio.
