When looking at the state of the authoring tool space, two words come to mind. And for the entire rapid content authoring tool space, I have to ask – Why? An authoring tool solution is supposed to be all about the ability for folks to create, build courses that can be linear (A to B to C) aka click-click or non-linear (why WBT was empowered in the first place, where the learner can bounce around A to C to G, focusing on what they need to learn, and returning as often as they want). . The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). Yeah, I know we have just jumped into January, but in a review of the past several months, authoring tools continue to follow a similar path amongst themselves with certain feature sets. Jump on the Bandwagon. I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. Perhaps their audience is unaware of LMSs who offer assessment tools. What does it all mean?

Along with two of my colleagues at BLP, we showed attendees OUR Moodle site - and attempted to illustrate many of the cool features Moodle provides and how Moodle facilitates informal learning and not just functions as a place to house and track e-learning. Example: I created a “course in Moodle called Adobe Max. Even better, the posts show the author’s picture and provide a link to the author so people can get in touch with the author if they’d like. Those who want to use it just to track learning are missing its point.
