eLearning Thought Leaders: Mark Lassoff

eLearning Weekly

Mark Lassoff of LearnToProgram.tv. I was very lucky to catch Mark Lassoff in between speaking at DevLearn, working on his forthcoming book from Focal Press, and producing his next training video for the company he founded, LearnToProgram.tv. Mark is an anomoly in the world of elearning these days, because he knows how to code. I’m not just talking about the two big programming languages, HTML and Flash.

PowerPoint 2010: Animating the Pieces of a Grouped Object as a Whole

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by AJ George. Last week I was revamping the presentation accompanying our Online Trainer Training: Engaging the Virtual Learner class when I ran into a bit of an animation shortcoming in PowerPoint. I wanted to animate the boat below so it "sailed" onto the slide.     Adding the animation effect was not a problem. I had the shapes grouped in one overall boat shape and selected Animations > Add Animation > Entrance > Fly In.

Why does learning content seem so much more exciting on an iPad?

Clive on Learning

I'm convinced that the future of e-learning will be on tablet devices. Not so much performance support, because you need that to hand every minute of the day and a smart phone is the obvious vehicle. But for learning, a tablet seems such a perfect fit. Since DevLearn last week, when it seemed every other person was carrying an iPad, I've been trying to figure out just what it is that tablets offer as a delivery medium for learning which a laptop can't do equally as well.

Want to write? Get on a train

Clive on Learning

I've been trying to figure out for years now why sitting on a train is such a productive environment when it comes to designing and writing. It has occurred to me in the past that, when I'm struggling to get something done, I'd be better off getting a ticket to somewhere - anywhere - and not getting off until the job's done. Obviously this doesn't work if the train's so crowded you have to stand.

Our Takeaways from DevLearn 2011

E-learning Uncovered

This week I attended my first DevLearn, and as hyped as it was in the months prior to the event, it did not disappoint. DevLearn is one of the largest events in the learning industry; according to the conference website, 1,747 people registered for the event. Surprisingly, though, it didn’t feel impersonal to me. I knew many people there from #lrnchat and the communities that the eLearning Guild has helped to cultivate, and I met many others at the conference itself.

Reading from a script is not for me

Clive on Learning

This time last year, I wrote the following in the Onlignment blog under the heading Why I’m not going to speak from a script again : For some reason, there are lessons that take a long time to learn – however often an action leads to negative consequences, you just seem bound to repeat it. One lesson I really hope I have now learned is that reading from a script doesn’t work – at least not for me.

Awards? Who needs them?

Saffron Interactive

Now before you start thinking this post is going to be full of sour grapes, let me explain that I’m quite happy with the awards Saffron has won in the past. I’m also looking forward to pitching along with our client to win an LPI 2012 award for which we’ve just been short-listed. And that’s enough self-congratulation too. The question I really want to address is: in what way – if at all – do our learners (and yours) benefit from industry awards?
