Great Training Starts With Asking Great Questions

Mindflash

The biggest problem I see with trainers and educators? Simple. They talk too much! They feel a need to lecture — to impart their knowledge on trainees. Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) aren’t much better in this regard. They often think that their “expertise” means they must have all the answers to students’ questions. Great learning happens through questions — in the asking, not the telling.

We didn’t have a learning management system and online social networks and rapid authoring tools were in the future. The development tools of choice were Microsoft Word, flip charts, masking tape, Mr Sketch markers and screen shots of mainframe computer screens.

A ‘very important’ writing tip from C.S. Lewis

Good To Great

I just came across a real gem of a letter  on Letters of Note  (a blog that’s definitely worth a look), sent by C.S. Lewis to a young American fan in 1956. Isn’t it lovely and quite remarkable that he replied to his fan mail in such a thoughtful and personal way? Aside from that, though, this letter stood out to me because of a particular piece of advice shared in it, which I think all e-learning designers (indeed, all writers!) should be mindful of: In writing. Don’t use adjectives which merely tell us how you want us to feel about the thing you are describing.

Stuck in a job that sucks? 4 Ways to Get Over the Suck in Stuck

Trina Rimmer

Last fall, the NY Times ran a great article - "Do Happier People Work Harder?". In it, the author cited results from The Gallup-Healthways  Well-Being Index  which indicated that Americans feel worse about their jobs — and work environments — than ever before. Not too surprising. This assessment coupled with my own casual observations and conversations with frustrated friends and colleagues allows me to draw many conclusions about myself, the fate of the modern worker , and ultimately the fate of the L&D function. But How do you thrive when you're stuck in job that sucks? Resist! Period.

The tensions at EDGEX2012

Viplav Baxi Meanderings

Speakers at the EDGEX Conference debated many tensions and challenges apparent in education today. George Siemens evocatively questioned the use of the word “disruptive” and asserted that we should call for transformation instead. Given the broad societal transitions to a networked and complex ecology, he talked about how initiatives like Coursera, Udacity and the Khan Academy provided disruptions, but did not transform education. That leverage of transformative educational research, was perhaps what excited many of the international and national speakers and delegates at EDGEX.
