As a result, I grew up learning how to find information the traditional way—in books, magazines, and even microfilm newspapers. But I also learned how to find information on the Internet, and how to measure the credibility of a source early on. Later, we were told “you can use online sources, but not Wikipedia.”

He reads books, accesses the Britannica Encyclopedia CD on his PC, participates in group discussions at his university, reads journals, magazines and newspapers in the library, logs on to the (slowly working) internet once in a while, watches TV, listens to the radio, and so on. Much of our learning is informal and happens online.

Formal and informal learning – two peas in the same pod. There has been a lot of talk lately about formal and informal learning in organizations. With informal learning this is mostly a gamble – though to be fair Wikipedia has proved to be just as accurate as Encyclopedia Britannica. Advantages of informal learning.

The analogy I give is of Wikipedia. Teachers always tell students not to use Wikipedia, some even ban Wikipedia. However, when asked to write a report, where is the first place kids go for initial information?….Wikipedia Wikipedia (banned or not). Educate them on the proper use of Wikipedia. 72, 652-663.

The applications everyone from Wired to the Wall Street Journal are talking about are altering the way we interact with each other, the way we purchase goods and services, and the way we learn.
