The idea that you are going to require staff to carryout major changes to their existing materials is always likely to induce an expected and to be frank understandable level of reticence, however by using Wimba Create , which will convert materials produced in MS Word into Scorm compliant packages, can pretty much neutralise that.

I started three new level 3 groups today and as a first exercise decided they should begin to make use of Moodle by posting lifestyle styles and ambitions to a forum. Postings could include links, particularly if they had Myspace, some did. days a week, so what happens the rest of the week?

We worked through all the introductory how-to exercises in Moodle and had time, about 20 minutes, at the end to discuss wider issues such as Learning Objects and Content Repositories. The training course for the LEA (Local Education Authority) went extremely well, a small group of only five probably helped.

The course can now run at the pace of the students, they will provide me feedback via the Journal, have access to resources using Block Folders, submit completed exercises as Assignments and keep in touch using Forums and Chat. In fact when the boss came along to lookover the set-up, he signed himself up as well.

Course notes on the web are just course notes from the print room and without repurposing for e-Learning this was no surprise, basically an exercise to confirm what I felt I already knew. Why, because used in this way we have a course management system, not a vle.

I can now say that apart from a couple of misplaced course units and what appears to be an issue with the odd mime type the whole exercise has run very smoothly. The last couple of weeks including the usual half term have certainly been busy given that we took the opportunity to move a Moodle vle from a Linux to Windows platform.

The rationale was primarily a cost saving exercise, and given that we have the in-house expertise to make it happen, we have, and all appears to be running very well. The next stage will be the move from our current Bromley College vle from our own Linux to Windows server.

Well I must say I did not imagine commenting in my blog that upon discovering my class had abandoned a programming exercise I had set, and were all fully immersed with some page on the Internet, that I would be happy, but I was. I do invite comments from anyone who has had the same issue arise.
