We may have all been drinking the same cool-aid, but at the IMS Global Learning Consortium Learning Impact Conference in Toronto, there was a meeting of the minds. The IMS is at the cutting edge of web 2.0 However, of the participants actually doing it I spoke with at the IMS conference, many believe the requirements are ahead of the market and they are being forced to make decisions from a limited set of options.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Half of Companies Blocking Facebook

Wednesday, August 22, 2007 Half of Companies Blocking Facebook Christy Tucker has been musing on Social Networking as LMS: Problems and Opportunities. One real problem is corporate fear of social networking tools. Im no Facebook super-user and I havent experienced a huge time suck from it, but I suppose its possible. So Im not sure the issue is people leaking secret information, but maybe just companies afraid of being bad-mouthed. And Im in complete agreement.

Why an LMS Needs Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) Functionality

TOPYX LMS

The problem is that the training they offer their workers is not always delivered through a user-friendly platform (for example, an online learning platform that requires multiple logins and consumes too much of a learner’s time). IMS Global Learning Consortium says, ‘When vendors take advantage of a common approach to interoperability, such as LTI, integrations can be completed considerably faster and at a much lower cost.’

Social Networking – A Contrarian View

Upside Learning

Such networks come into their own when you want to find people who can help you solve problems, provide insights, or provide expertise you may not have. Till that time, I wouldn’t be relying on them for much more than connecting and communicating, another tool like IM, video chat, VoIP etc. Today, I’m going to adopt a contrarian view. We all know social networks promote learning; while the mechanisms aren’t documented or well-understood, that it works isn’t in doubt anymore.
