2010 LMS Products of the Year

eLearning 24-7

LMS Products of the Year 2010. A lot of great products out there this year, new updates and latest versions; new companies, new services and just some real innovation. If you are seeking TM as your focus and you want one of the big dogs – I found Plateau’s system to offer appropriate functionality for it, but found some real concern in other areas (see my product review). The product is Flash based, which is nice, but lack of mobile optimization for the iPad.

The Business Web

Tony Karrer

Now, everyone agrees that the future of software is no software at all—but rather an industry dominated by tens of thousands of heterogeneous services delivering everything from traditional Office productivity to Verticals to VOIP to ERP and CRM systems. The reason is that The Business Web will be best known for its ability to easily create composite applications, or what is now popularly known as "mash-ups.”

One of the common reasons I hear from knowledge workers inside large organizations for not following the suggestions I provide is that the organization itself puts up barriers to working this way. One possibly good side product will be that total learner hours shouldn’t be a primary metric.

The video trend will continue in 2013 as video is embedded into Web courses, attached to learning databases and appears on self-generated YouTube sites, Skype and video-enabled webcasting. Reinforcing learning can involve cadres of learners who chat on a firm’s social site. Collaborative learning also can be informal discussion groups in Yammer, rating content on SharePoint or mashing up a video.

I am quite sure you have heard the term “gamification” It is everywhere you look, at trade shows, in publications, on various net sites. You take said video and either view it on your device, maybe TV, share with it with others, post it on sites and so on. . It comes from YouTube or Vivemo or similar, and then embedded in a course or directly into your learning platform or maybe just right within the sites themselves; in the EDTECH space – YouTube rules.

Go onto any social media site: Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Quora or any of the thousands of sites, and you will see people engaging with total strangers. Your day to day operations or products coming down the line? The common reason of course, is fear of company secrets or information, but again, if you use the various social media, you will see this rarely happens on these sites. Greetings from Moscow.

What’s hurting the LMS market

Revenues across the board are up, profit margins are healthy and competition is on-going (always a good thing). Illogical – I often see systems that add features that seem as though they tossed a bunch of ideas on a wall and whatever stuck up there, went into their platform. Go to some vendor sites and try to figure out what exactly are they offering. Their sites seem more interested in pitch and filler rather then showing the product and its key features or functions.
