As I have noted numerous times, if you listen to vendors, everyone loves their system, they have retention rates in the plus 90%, yet, somehow the number one thing they hear is that people are looking for a new system, they are unhappy with their current system. There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. E-Commerce. Customized skinning – albeit in today’s market there are some vendors who charge for skins – disgusting! Modules in 2012. Excluding the above, there are vendors out there who charge extra for. Social learning – in many cases it is a more robust than your standard chat, discussion, etc.

When you need a fix, then the LMS vendor must work with you either remote to solve it or if it is big nasty fix, go on site. SaaS and LMS vendors. From a LMS vendor perspective there are a lot of pluses. Systems have come a long way from the days of yesteryear. Security is quite strong for SaaS systems.

I re-affirmed it in my forecasts for 2012. I should note that you cannot use any 3rd party vendor authoring tool to upload courses into these systems. Cannot upload off the shelf content from a 3rd party vendor – say Rosetta Stone or Skillsoft or in some cases e-learning marketplaces.

I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Vendors who are already in the SaaS only space, should continue to offer features that maximize its power.

Mobile Learning – yes you can view it on tablets and smartphones. As noted in Summer 2012, will enable online/offline synch with native iOS app – the next evolution of SCORM. Social Learning – No. Built in Content Authoring Tool – No. IMO, not a big deal.
