Most of us aren’t graphic designers and we struggle to come up with a nice looking design. One way to work around that is to be inspired by those who have graphic design skills. As a habit, I like to review website designs for ideas. I learn a lot about layouts and how the designer is using color.

When you first start building courses they help with developing a consistent design and course structure. Ideally, each course that you build dictates a unique design. My first inclination is to look for a clean design with lots of open space so I have room to add my own content. I also like variations on the slide layouts.

If you want a good elearning developer you should look for one who can do more than great looking bullet point slides. Don’t expect the hiring manager to click through 30 slides to get to the one interesting interaction. That guarantees that the reviewer won’t click past the first slide. Scenario driven content.

As a rule of thumb, once I get three or more slides with the same information, I try to put as much as I can on the master slide so it’s easier to edit and maintain. When you build your slides, try to determine what’s persistent and then add as much of the persistent content to the master slide.
