Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Best example? Frankly a few deserve coal in their stockings. Market as a whole.

CBT Prior to online learning known then as WBT, and then the latter term of e-learning (vendors today, use it to refer to content that is online), there was CBT. CBT was the “new” and exciting way to learn. Articulate and Adobe definitely did damage to the market, again, with their original RCAT.

Easy to use, features include 45 languages, uses color coded phonetic semantics – identifying each word in various colors to match the word in the other language — i.e. in my example – seeing the word in English, viewing it in Hindi. While most people were oohing and awwing over Articulate’s Storyline, virtually no one was checking out Sh!FT’s Storyline says it will be able to output to HTML5, but when talking to a vendor who is testing Articulate’s product with their own, he informed me that it is currently unavailable with the product. .

A couple of rapid content authoring tool vendors are incorporating HTML5 features in their tool, which can be used on tablets, and of course the iPad. According to a person I spoke with last week at the Articulate booth at Tech Knowledge 2011, Articulate is expecting to roll out HTML5 functionality in their product in Q4 2011 or Q1 2012.

Vendor adoption is slow. I believe once Articulate and some of the other big names truly launch products (such as Storyline), the market will wait. If you are going to offer HD output and even push it – then you have to offer tablet capability – since the iPad for example offers the ability to have it seen in HD.
