This is my preferred approach for a course that uses a conventional interface like those that come with the rapid elearning players. The players are simple and follow normal conventions. So before we could teach them how to use the computers, we had to teach simple things like using a mouse. This same course continued through explanations of all of the player features. If your course player follows convention, then it’s usually not hard to figure out what’s a play button and what’s a back arrow.

Karl Kapp and I had a fantastic workshop last week at ASTD ICE. It is a board game, though the App Store does have an iPad version of it that you can play as a single player or do pass-and-play format. A player who has been doing well can have the Robber placed on one of his resources, cutting off the flow. Levels of difficulty.

It’s not as if the game was so challenging that players couldn’t finish it. Most players turned off the game long before finishing it. Learners have a choice, just as the players of E.T. More : What Angry Birds Can Teach Us About Instructional Design. Gamers couldn’t bear to finish it. A ton went wrong with the E.T.

There’s a very simple help menu if you need it, but most players don’t. Players get to explore the game on their own and try different techniques. After a number of levels have been cleared the player has likely developed a certain amount of skill using the first kind of bird. It’s simple and intuitive.
