My current business card says Im a "Manager of Instructional Design". I have learned everything I "know" about instructional design and teaching by doing. Had thought I would go into teaching. And now Im here -- "Manager of Instructional Design." But at this point, Im here to stay. And yet here I am. Hi Cammy!!!

Im not just thinking about the gadgets and the gizmos that you use or the instructional design "method" behind the process (e.g., ADDIE), but rather the teaching tools themselves. Im excellent at creating ridiculous rhymes and ditties for my kids; I think I could come up with something interesting for a course. Other Ideas?

Is there some historical background here that Im missing, like computers in the UK didnt have speakers until 2002 so they never bothered? We know to avoid narrating text word for word, for instance. Im a linear reader in recovery and have been actively learning how to skim books and not feel guilty about it. Lots of practical ideas and examples for turning basic teaching points into learning games -- from casual games to teach facts and concepts, to detailed simulations that teach procedures and problem solving.

If I notice Im losing someones attention in class, Ill instantly make direct eye-contact, maybe raise an eyebrow, and start talking directly to that student, and most of the time. I dont do any online teaching at the moment, but I do a lot of online collaboration on projects -- reviewing content with SMEs, going over storyboards, etc.

But I dont think folks are comfortable with the notion that TEACHING or TRAINING can or should be messy. What makes for messy training/teaching? The training doesnt teach what the participants want or need (failure to consult with actual learners while designing the program). But Im learning. And messy e-Learning?

Im not sure if the SME was reading a script, reading the notes, or just speaking from the heart. Whilst I think that trainers can pick up and use techniques from professional voice-over artists, there is nothing like having someone speaking from the heart that is incredibly passionate about the subject they are teaching.

The next project Im about to take on is going to be more of a just-in-time performance support tool. Im thinking that teaching in a scenario-based mode (e.g., Hey Rupa, I almost always go with that scenario approach -- not teaching every single drop-down menu, but teaching the task-based process through a scenario.
