The context of the VR environment must be authentic and action oriented, but it must also be bounded in such a way that it ensures all of the learning objectives are encountered by the participant without it being too obvious or onerous. Create the VR environment so that the learning objectives are embedded in an experiential activity.

One tendency is to try to pile on one objective after another in a game format. Too many learning objectives become complicated. Keep the number of learning objectives manageable. For games to be effective for learning, they need to be interactive. Pitfall #4– Trying to teach “everything.”

On the other hand, most learning experiences begin with learning objectives which provide the learner no mystery or intrigue or suspense. They give you the answer “You will learn 3 things about…” The learning objectives tell the learner what to expect. They are not engaging.

Need to have a goal (we’ll call it learning objectives!) Couple of rules, don’t polish a prototype too early (you become married to it). Here is some great advice–Keep things simple and “raw” when first designing it. Iteration is important. Reduce the “friction” in the game.

Irrespective of whether the 3DLE is a part of a larger blended intervention or a stand-alone entity, it is essential to ensure that the learning intervention is addressing a vetted business need, and that the learning objectives within the intervention are optimally tuned to address that business need. When creating a learning game, its important to match in-game activities with the skills you want to teach. The chart below illustrates and attempt to match game-play, learning objectives and assessment to determine the best combination.

When you create online instruction make sure the learner is given proper feedback and that it is corrective to guide the learner to the right learning objective, however, makes sure that is the same nature and type of feedback he or she would receive in the actual situation.

To ensure that the learning goals of a game, gamification or simulation are met, the first priority is to design the interactive learning event to focus on learning objectives from the beginning and not as an afterthought.

Next, determine your learning objectives (I guess this could be done first but I think knowing the type of game or gamification effort you want to create helps put the objectives in perspective but both can be done about the same time.

Player want to find the “goodies in the game even if they goodies aren’t directly tied to a specific “learning objective. Video games are delightfully filled with randomness and the unexpected and you know what…that’s what keeps players coming back. These are called “Easter Eggs.

In virtual world learning, the locus of control moves from the instructor or teacher to the learner and the contextual design must accommodate the actions and interactions that participants have within the immersive environment. Learning objectives are not covered conversationally, but experienced viscerally.

For example, one time in teaching how to conduct an audit, instead of the traditional approach of presenting learning objectives, terminology and the audit forms we changed the approach. A great way to achieve that is to create a game or gamified approach.

So, for example, instead of thinking about creating learning objectives, gamification forces a designer to think about creating a challenge. All good games begin with a challenge; instruction should begin with a challenge and not with objectives.

To avoid the perception that virtual immersive environments are a fad or inappropriate for corporate learning, make sure you design the virtual immersive experience around these eight principles: Instructionally Grounded. The best learning outcomes from using a game in the classroom occur when a three step process is followed. The teacher should first introduce to the students the game and learning objectives covered in the game. The teacher should tell the students what they will be learning by playing the game.

If the designer of the instruction provides continual feedback to the student concerning progress toward terminal learning objective, then the learner themselves can gain an understanding of their own mastery of content. You’ll hear a lot of people talk about learning having a “seat at the table”. Leaders don’t want to hear about learning objectives, they want to hear how learning is going to make a difference in their sphere of influence. One common mistake organizations make in designing learning experiences in virtual worlds is failing to have specific learning objectives, either formal or informal, for the intended interactions. Most instruction doesn’t start with a challenge—it starts with a list of learning objectives. It is not standard practice, it could happen, but it doesn’t. Most instruction is not interactive—it’s lists of bullets. Most instruction doesn’t have continual feedback—only a score on a multiple choice test at the end.
