Authoring tools continued to be a mish-mash, with many continuing to forget what their number one goal truly is – creating content/courses. Yet for the SaaS tools, analytics, and offering folks a way to bypass a learning system, as though these tools will more than suffice, shouldn’t be their top, let alone top three objectives.

have been making their rounds these past few months, mine included (authoring tools), but what about the worst? Award category – Time to retire your tool, product, etc. Questionmark. Yes it is a top-notch SaaS assessment tool and it has a lot of functionality, but the UI is dated and needs major revamp.

One e-learning vendor who has as part of their assessment solutions has an online proctoring component is Questionmark. If your learning system vendor focuses on employees and also customers, they should be able to support an API or SSO with Questionmark or other online proctoring solutions. Authoring tool vendors were no-shows as well. . For the last two years, I ask my audience (I present at OEB), if they use 3rd party authoring tools. I should add that folks who use built-in authoring tools in the HE systems, find them to be horrible and not user friendly. Authoring tool is horrible (BB and Canvas were listed).

I also wonder if tool makers like Articulate Quizmaker , QuestionMark and other testing creation tools are considering a Facebook app version. I wonder if we could ask the developers to make it opensource so that any content/topic could be used? Geography? Of course the obvious question would be WHY?

Standalone Quiz/Assessment Tools. I love Questionmark, its a wonderful product and it can use a “connector” to integrate into your learning platform or system. However, times are continuing to change in regards to the overall standalone quiz/assessment tools market. The same can be said for survey tools.

Two situations recently have got me thinking about e-learning authoring tools. Everybody's got an authoring tool. The next generation of authoring tools included a handful of really serious players, notably Authorware (now with Adobe) and Toolbook (now with SumTotal), both still going although not so strongly. Why on earth not?

I think its pretty safe to assume that the big corporate LMS vendors will jump on this bandwagon soon enough by adding a workflow tool into their systems to finally be able to support richer specifications of blended learning programs. The providers I've listed seem to say, we'll provide you all the tools that you can compose into your blend.
