Online assessments become more and more popular not only among distance learning institutions but also among blended and traditional schools. There are also some advantages for creating multiple choice exams: - they are relatively simple to put together (if done incorrectly:-) ) , - they provide immediate feedback, - they can be randomized to prevent plagiarism and cheating. Digital worlds offer great opportunities for development of more sophisticated measures of assessment of learner’s knowledge and skills. | CLARK QUINN MAY 30, 2012 Flipping assessment Inspired by Dave Cormier’s learning contract , and previous work at learner-defined syllabi and assessment, I had a thought about learner-created project evaluation rubrics. wouldn’t assume that they’re going to get it right initially, and provide scaffolding, but eventually more and more responsibility devolves to the learner. This is part of good design; you should be developing your assessment criteria as part of the analysis phase, e.g. before you start specifying a solution. Formative Assessment – The goal of Formative Assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback [feed-forward?] More specifically, formative assessments: help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work. Formative assessments are generally low stakes , which means that they have low or no point value. final project. paper. | SHAREPOINT AND ASSESSMENT MAY 27, 2011 So what do we mean by assessments anyway? When one person talks about assessments, they might mean something different to someone else. The best definition I’ve seen of assessment is from my colleague Eric Shepherd: “any systematic method of obtaining evidence by posing questions to draw inferences about the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and other characteristics of people for a specific purpose.”. | SHAREPOINT AND ASSESSMENT MAY 27, 2011 So what do we mean by assessments anyway? Automated, computer-based assessment does a pretty good job of testing for knowledge and certain cognitive skills, but it is going to tell you nothing about a person's attitude, interpersonal skills or motor skills (unless you've got some pretty impressive simulator doing the job). This post continues my commentary to the Learning Insights 2012 Report produced by Kineo for e.learning age magazine. Simple. insights | | | | | | | | | -
ELEARNING ACUPUNCTURE | FRIDAY, JULY 22, 2011 Don’t police plagiarism! Instead design assignments that cannot be plagiarized. What intrigues me about it is the last paragraph that provides some options on a different approach: designing assignments that cannot be plagiarized. they provide disincentives to plagiarism). Therefore, designing a component of your assessment scheme devoted to discussion will be wise choice. In some courses it is difficult to avoid having a term paper in the assessment scheme – so plagiarism can become attractive to students in this scenario. The pressure to score well on such a high stake assessment can be crushing for many students. Bonus! Discussion. MORE >> -
CLARK QUINN | THURSDAY, MAY 9, 2013 Assessing online assessments Writing good assessments is hard. Extensions that are high value include problem generators and randomness in the order of options (challenging attempts to ‘game’ the assessment). greater variety of response options for novelty isn’t bad either, and automarking is desirable for at least a subset of assessment. While SMEs can write content and even examples (if they get pedagogical principles and are in touch with the underlying thinking, but writing good assessments is another area. KAPP NOTES | MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2012 Ideas About Games and Learner Assessment So here are some articles and ideas about using games for assessment of the application of skills and measuring a level of learning. Here is an interesting article titled Proof of Learning: Assessment in Serious Games. The article outlines some good ideas for integrating assessments into games and why simply sticking a multiple choice question into an otherwise “cool” game doesn’t make it an educational game or even fun. This makes MCQs the obvious first choice, and often the easiest choice, for assessment in serious games. How long did it take? MORE >> -
