Organizations such as PACT, ASTD, MNISPI, and the Digital Learning Forum get my creative juices going to generate new ideas and synergies. It was an opportunity I couldn’t miss.

Typically elearning courses start from existing content. And often that content dictates how the course is structured and how it looks. I like this look because it helps get away from the PowerPoint look and it adds a sense of informality to the course which may help make the content seem less rigid. Instead it’s an acknowledgement that there’s a place for linear content. A couple of the benefits of elearning are consistent delivery of content and compression of time to deliver it. Compressed time to deliver content. Many times we’ll spend 80% of the time going through 50% of the content. Learner flexibility.

They usually start with a nice looking template and then as they build the course they’ll add images that represent the content on the screen. But if not, then they end up with a discordant look where the graphics don’t quite match the content. The look was rich but it didn’t match the earthquake content and seemed out of place.

Most elearning courses I see are info-centric and just push content out. Instead they’re questions to get the learner to reflect on the content. In addition, the process of having to create engaging questions forces us as course developers to put the content into a context that’s relevant to the learner. Details to follow.
