Large MNC companies like IBM Deloitte (in India), sometimes just hire IDs and outsource the graphics/development work to elearning companies who have specialized graphics and development teams. Im guessing youre designing online distance learning courses. Im in the weird place of for-profit education, which really has characteristics of both market sectors. I think Im somewhat of an anomaly in the field. Maybe Im not an instructional designer at all. My company creates customized course development templates for organizations. Course developers (who may or may not be instructional designers) use Flash to create courses, but they dont need to know how to use Flash at all.

Is it the number of theories you can cite? IMHO you are an instructional designer if you actually plan and develop the instructional content, whether for classroom, internet, job aide, etc. Adult learning theory? So as a licensed teacher I feel very knowledgeable in theory as well as practice and took that to a new level.

Im concerned that women will be excluded if such a focus is put on gaming skills -- or at least the gamer label. Im just raising some questions. I guess Im saying the focus should be less on "gaming" and more on use of new technology (social networking sites, gadgets, etc.) I dont have a conclusion here.

Jay Cross says its "presumptuous and confining for developers to foist objectives on learners, for it disregards the learners needs, prior learning, and context." Belatedly, Im thinking that there are relatively easy ways to enable learners to have cake or to eat it as they see fit. Not sure if any company has try to innovate on this.

The folks at Kineo wrote a piece on the future of rapid e-learning tools, summarizing "our view is to give potential authors [SMEs] some easy to use but well structured templates which will give instructional integrity to how they develop their learning."
