I can see how theorists might argue that reading text aloud to the learner addresses multiple "learning styles," but the real-world experience is one of frustration: you want to read ahead but you cant because the narrator reads more slowly than you do. In Rapid Project Management Techniques for e-Learning presented by Coates & Hill of Deloitte, they outlined their approach to creating a big enterprise-wide training program in an extremely aggressive timeframe. And by asking this, Im not suggesting that design isnt important, for it is - its seen by some as part of the pedagogy. Some claiming to be IDs have no idea how to present information, how to logically order the presentation, or how to write.

wait, Im getting verbose. Push most of the content out to job aids and then just present the learner with a few compelling scenarios. But its the learners job, which is why they should *want* to learn the material (to Stephens point). Cathy Moore urges us to chop the basic fluff out of the course. Stick to the meat.
