I present at a lot of conferences and workshops. Live Transcriptions & Closed Captions in Google Slide Presentations. Here’s an example of live transcription and closed captions in Google Slides. I find the transcription on Google Slides is a lot faster and a bit more accurate than in PowerPoint.

I’ve been working on interactive scenarios for a few upcoming workshops and created some background images that we’ll use to build interactive branched scenarios. The free download includes the original images as well as a folder with images cropped to 16:9 so they fit perfectly in 16×9 slides.

Click the image to see a larger version. As I built the slides, I wrote the slide number by each node of the flowchart for future reference. To produce the slides and SWF, I used Keynote 08 ( not Keynote 09! To produce the slides and SWF, I used Keynote 08 ( not Keynote 09! ). There are no variables involved.

I’m asked to review courses all the time and one of the most frustrating things is to go through the course and find the developer has locked every slide. I usually put a button in one of the corners that gives me quick access to slides. Sometimes, the button just skips the slide. Create a slide with menu links.

Start by selecting the clip art image, ungrouping it, and making the customizations you need. I also like to save the new image as a.png. I try to stick with the same image style and remove all of the background items that make clip art look like clip art. Create Characters by Pulling Them Out of Stock Images.

And here are a couple of silly examples where I use the free emojis as a way to offer hints on a slide and as a way to provide right and wrong feedback. If you do a search online you’ll find all sorts of free assets like free stock images, icons, fonts and other media that work perfectly for your elearning courses. I guess there’s a big demand for free stock images and free fonts for family use. Add Attribution Credits to the Image or Slide.

This can be problematic because when you modify the aspect ratio of the slide, it means the existing content may get skewed or require a bunch of tweaking to get it re-aligned. PowerPoint Tip: Use Pattern Fills for Image Placeholders. In PowerPoint, we can create all sorts of master slide layouts and add a whole host of placeholders. One type is the image placeholder. What I like about this template by Dublin Design is that they filled the image placeholders with a pattern fill. Very clever.

Here’s a free PowerPoint template I built for a recent workshop. The template is made of two simple layouts which you can edit in the master slides. One way I integrate colors into my slides is by adding an image to my screen and then I pick colors from the image to create my buttons, background and accent colors. Visual Design Mistake 1: Images are Scrunched & Not Scaled. An image is inserted and then to make it fit or move it, it gets moved from the top or side anchors on the bounding box. This scrunches the image and makes it look a little off. Ever take a course where each slide or screen looks different than the other?

The free template is structure to slide up and down as you navigate. I designed the files for a workshop on building some interactive timelines, however it can be used for anything. I shared a cool 3D interaction in a recent workshop demo and have had lots of people ask how I built it. How to insert the 3D model in PowerPoint: Create a slide and then select a 3D object. Duplicate the slide (we’ll need this for the video). The first slide is the starting point from which the 3D object rotates.

If you look at the images I recommended and the images I used in the course, you’ll see that I didn’t use the images I recommended. That’s where my earlier tip to find an image pack really works. Essentially, you want to find a viable sliver from an image or screen grab. The process is very easy: Create a slide with a header and footer shape. Find a contextual image. Fill the header with a color picked from the top of the image. Fill the footer with a color picked from the bottom of the image.

You don’t need to be a graphics artist, but you should know the difference between a bitmap and vector image because they play a role in the quality of what you see on the screen. The ones that get pixelated are bitmap images. When you scale the image, you’re scaling the pixel. When you scale the image, you’re scaling the pixel.
