Let’s face it – RFI/RFP documents sent over to learning system vendors are massive tomes that confuse, challenge and even baffle some vendors. Then you have RFP/RFIs that lack substance. The fact of the matter is nobody loves creating RFP/RFIs. They can be 25 pages. 50 pages, even 100 pages or more.

Personally a vendor can call their system whatever they want, but there are a few factoids to remember about micro-learning. A few do not have a mobile app. Cumbersome? Not so much.

The majority of vendors will continue, regardless of what you espouse. Now, if you want employee learning only, and you go to a vendor who only does customer training, then the initial “use case” rejection (politely) is understandable. The vendor is Skill Jar. The vendors really need to know more about the use case.

Another vendor calls their system nearly every keyword for SEO purposes (you can see it on their web site). They call it something else.

Trends at the show – vendor wise, some real surprises, some not. . As I hit the floor, I saw only a couple of vendors. . Especially with mobile video. There were vendors on the video angle, but again it was not a “hot scene” vendor wise. Shocking (not really) plenty of mobile-first do not.

Now, lately what I’ve seen are some vendors hitting the mark, but others showing off very slick graphs via circle donuts as we say, or compass looking things. A “showroom” experience – and you will see it with some of the booths (vendors pay for that size of space and it is expensive), is part of this approach.

I mention this because there are vendors who continue to push towards adding performance management functionality to their learning system, with many people assuming these vendors to be, LMS vendors when it just isn’t universally true. I know of vendors who tell me they are not in the content business.

Yet one of the items that is never mentioned are the customers and employees of the vendor who has been acquired. On the customer side, if you are the client of said “been acquired” vendor you may be asking yourself, what can I do? From my experience, vendors do have some options. See if there any loopholes.

These two vendors are EdCast and Degreed. Getting back to being unaware, I find the same issue with a few vendors in the learning system space who are really LXPs, but have no idea. It reminded me of the vendors in the space who scream they are not an LMS, even though they hit all the standards of an LMS. . In my opinion, no.

Often, these posts have 287 or more responses from LMS vendors, each claiming they offer the best solution, given the overwhelming evidence provided in the original 2-sentence help request. They’ve hit a wall with features that don’t accomplish what a vendor promised. LMS vendors have vastly different licensing models.

M-Learning with a native app – slowly trucking along, but I am hearing quite a few vendors who are either in development or getting going in 2014.
