As prep for this, we’ve put together a comprehensive checklist of Social Learning Strategy topics that learning professionals and executives should consider when thinking through their objectives and plans. Introduction to Social Learning Strategies. Organizational adoption of social media as a comprehensive learning strategy is one part software rollout, one part transformational change, and one part large scale corporate initiative. | CLARK QUINN JULY 6, 2010 The Social Media Cigarette Break He opined that the new ‘cigarette’ break was the social media break where employees will stand outside with their mobile phone and check in on their social networks. The reason, of course, being that their companies block social media access via their IT infrastructure. I remember this because the company asked that the vendor turn off the email system as they didn’t want folks frittering away time being social. Yet that same mentality of not trusting employees to use resources responsibly comes in with social networks. | | | | | | | ENGAGED LEARNING JANUARY 12, 2010 Checklist of Social Learning Strategies In preparation, we came up with a bunch of things that one would need to know when creating a social learning strategy. Checklist of Social Learning Strategies. Cultural Issues Related to Social Learning. What do executives, key stakeholders and “rank-and-file” think about social media and sharing? Social Learning Approaches and Methods. What “kind” of Social Learning models are you pursuing? What kinds of social learning interventions do you need? How will your social media elements interact with your Learning Management System? | STOATLY DIFFERENT JANUARY 31, 2012 Learning Without Strategy Specifically I got to thinking about Learning Strategy and how we perhaps don’t often take a moment to envision what the future will mean for our learning initiatives. What does this mean for Learning Strategy? He’d got an education but he hadn’t got a strategy. It lacks a strategy. eLearning Future LT LWF strategyMindmeld; there's an app for that. Nothing. | CLARK QUINN JULY 3, 2012 Piecing together collaboration and cooperation In an insightful piece , Harold Jarche puts together how collaboration and cooperation are needed to make organizations work ‘smarter’, integrating workgroups with the broader social network by using communities of practice as the intermediary. social strategyThis makes a lot of sense to me, and I was inspired to take a look at the practices within those categories. | CLARK QUINN FEBRUARY 8, 2011 Social Media Strategy thoughts What is a social media strategy for outreach? I’m mentioning these as two of the most viable and visible tools for social media engagement. If an organization is on social media, and increasingly they should be, it needs to be interactive. Your Twitter strategy should be aligned with your Facebook strategy, so your tweets point to new information on Facebook, your Facebook account reflects your tweets, etc. Once you’ve got the identity, then you need to align your Facebook and Twitter strategies. social strategyTwitter. CLARK QUINN | MONDAY, AUGUST 20, 2012 Coherent performance It’s abut how social and performance support are a natural connection. social strategyI’ve been revisiting performance support in preparation for the Guild’s Performance Support Symposium next month, and I’m seeing a connection between two models that really excite me. So, let’s start with a performance model. This model came from a look at how people act in the world and I was reminded of it during a conversation on informal learning. Most of the time, we’re acting in well-understood ways (e.g. Here, the support we need differs. MORE >> -
CLARK QUINN | TUESDAY, JANUARY 10, 2012 Level of ‘levels’ I think also at least for some social learning interventions. strategyI was defending Kirkpatrick’s levels the other day, and after being excoriated by my ITA colleagues, I realized there was not only a discrepancy between principle and practice, but between my interpretation and as it’s espoused. Perhaps I’ve been too generous. The general idea is that there are several levels at which you can evaluate interventions: whether the recipient considered the intervention appropriate or not. whether the recipient can demonstrate new ability after the intervention. CLARK QUINN | TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 2013 Starting from scratch My initial step would be to establish a social media system, supporting conversations and collaboration on work teams and communities of practice. Again, with a performance strategy focus. I’d probably structure this as a performance unit, and ensure that the staff are trained to look at the full suite of opportunities to improve performance including social, and consider the emotional side – motivation, anxiety, and confidence – as well as the cognitive. social strategyThe goal is to have tools ‘to hand’ as well as people. CLARK QUINN | WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 2013 Starting Strategy What would characterize the reasons why you might start with formal learning, versus performance support, versus social? My initial reaction, after working with my ITA colleagues, would be that you should start with social. Social really comes to it’s fore for organizations depending on continual innovation: perhaps consumer products, or other organizations focused on customer experience, as well as in highly competitive areas. social strategy While the longer term customization is very unique, I wondered if there were some meaningful categorizations. CLARK QUINN | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2013 Old -> New As social media is more available, people are more available, and people are often reaching out to others for support rather than courses. social strategyMy ITA Colleague Jay Cross had a hangout over the weekend and the conversation rolled around to the role of L&D in the new era (related to yesterday’s post ). I’ve previously addressed how we can now be using tech for more of the full suite of performance, but it occurred to me that there are some ways we could and should be thinking differently about the ways in which performance can be supported.
