SumTotal is calling their product a Human Capital Management system. Sure, they offer a separate LMS called SumTotal Maestro, but their TM has surprisingly (not really) been morphed into a HCM, will others follow? They purchased Outstart, a LMS. My system has LXP functionality/it’s an LMS with LXP. Here though is the kicker, a chunk of the learning system vendors (mainly LMS as a whole) offered a marketplace (it wasn’t visible – although Docebo, an LMS, was the first ones to have it visible – years ago). Not anymore.

The challenge is how a 3rd party authoring tools using TinCan can auto upload their new built courses directly into a LMS that supports TinCan. . Just as you can with PENS authoring tools and the systems that support PENS (i.e Of course the system – LMS will need to support TinCan, and right now that is few and far between.

The argument that you have to spend over 50K to find a sweet LMS is totally bogus. What is true is that there are plenty of awesome systems for less than 25K and even sweet systems with very nice feature sets for under 10K. I’m not talking about freebies such as Moodle or Sakai, but actually commercial systems.

Numbers will continue and I see a real jump in percentile of these types of systems. They are similar to what you see in your standard LMS, course content, learning paths, reporting – but it is not as robust (which is fine for some end users). Plus, the key factor for these types of systems – is storage.

What you receive in their system, is basic, in some cases, quite, and in many cases have an Excel 2010 appearance. But, wait, there are vendors who from a reporting side, require you to download the report and segment that way, skirting their responsibility to have it in their system – as part of it, without DL required.
