In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services. Acquiring another LMS or e-learning vendor. It was a myth.

There are dozens of free audio plugins available on the net, so why aren’t screen capturing/recording vendors offering the ability for the end user to add them? There is something wrong when a free and open source product like Audacity can do it, yet a product that costs hundreds of dollars cannot. E-Learning 24/7.

Additional cost. It will cost you for customizations. Some vendors will charge you per customization. Maybe you need specific reports that are not currently available in your system (extra charge), maybe you want an e-commerce component and the vendor does not offer it (extra charge), etc. Open Source LMSs.

It is all done within the platform, so you do not have to send the video to be transcribed to the 3rd party vendor, wait for it to get back and then publish. This is typically an additional cost – i.e. having an actual human (which is how it works) transcribes your video. Always an additional cost. Video V-Costs.

I have seen continued interest and downloads for open source AR tool kits. GestureTek develops motion control for tablets, e-readers, smartphones and televisions. Expect a few commercial vendors to jump into the augmented reality space for e-learning. Costs and quality will vary. Talent Management.

Even one time open source systems are starting to offer hosting for an additional cost. Savings of cost – ties into not building from scratch. Ability to use 3rd party authoring tool vendors is always a major plus – which most vendors do anyway – so adding this beyond ur new BFF is a no lose proposition.

Some vendors’ sales people will show you their demo that includes all the bells and whistles that come with the solution and fail to mention that to you (they should). Solve it: When the vendor is showing you the LMS/LCMS ask them if that is included in the system or an extra cost. Make sure to write down what costs extra.

For the vendors who charge a fee there are lots of reasons they come up with, including the mention that they have to pay people (I get it) or in other industries people pay for support or everyone else is doing it or in the case of the limited free option – that this meets the needs of most of our customers. Another fab fav is the we have it and say it, but it is actually an additional cost for you to get it. Other ones that charge you extras, that with most other vendors are free.

I know Totara is going to say that the product is built on open source and the folks who are buying it know the technical aspects/Moodle and thus this isn’t an issue. The A/V is Clam (open source) but still solid. . Are hosting costs universal? Bottom Line. Despite some hiccups this is still a good system.

Pearson not letting people know about their open source LMS that is in the works – you had to specifically ask them. I would play this at home – too many game based learning solutions look like freeware or the old Atari games from the 80s. The cost is $325 per license, but a minimum of 25 licenses.
