Special Post – Why the Big Four are not on my latest Top 10 LMS List

eLearning 24-7

Since my Top 10 list of LMS vendors has been posted online, I have received quite a bit of e-mail wondering why the biggest names: Cornerstone On Demand, Saba, SumTotal and SuccessFactors are not on the list. A LMS should first be a LMS. When I talk about a LMS, I am saying specifically a learning management system and the vendors themselves should see their own product first and foremost as a LMS, not as a TM/PM or whatever.  There is a wide assumption that if a product sells a lot it means that it is better than anyone else.  SumTotal. 2012 Lists. Between the two systems, I am leaning more towards LMS365, just because I honestly believe it has a future in the SharePoint space much more so than their other product (nothing against it, but…).   I mean ELF SharePoint LMS isn’t going anywhere,  but again, this is just my opinion, LMS365 is a new take with the integration of Office 365. Oh, strategic learning, extended enterprise and compliance are all included in their LMS.  I’m not sure why they “appear” as separate products on their site. SumTotal by Skillsoft. One person was literally eating while I was asking about a product. SumTotal. I ran into the issue myself with a few vendors who seemed as though they were too busy to talk to me (even if a bunch were just standing around), too busy to show me a demo (even when they had it on the screen), assessing/verifying you as a prospect,  talking to you as though you were an imbecile or treating you poorly in their booth – as in nasty. Their retort, “We do not have the ability to make an instance of our product”    At the show, I got the cold shoulder from one person.

On the home page the product is able to recommend courses based on what courses have been started and completed – per user. While the UI is vastly improved, on the admin side it needs a slight touch – but don’t get wrong the product is doable and nice. Can zero in with a mobile device in recording, even with a DV camera – so it is not just a wide shot when recording – which is awesome function for product demonstrations, heck even when showing someone how to do whatever. Feature wise this product is fantastic. Saba: See SumTotal.

The Cornerstone Effect

Similar thoughts are often associated with SumTotal (although they have vastly improved their UI, but they do see themselves at least from my take, and even through a Google search as a HCM, especially after the acquisition by Skillsoft), SuccessFactors, Oracle Learn, Saba, Kenexa and a few others.
