Web Conferencing with OpenMeetings

We did try a couple of the free web based services for this, but ran into some problem s with privacy and to a certain extent security. While the application can be run as a remotely hosted service, it can also be integrated with Moodle and Facebook. Anyway we began dig around on the web and found OpenMeetings.

Interesting to see the inclusion of a wide range of Google education services including email, blogs and docs. Similar to our own deployment they are Moodle based, with implementations of Mahara and Turnitin , along with hosting and custom upgrades from ULCC.

Well after your material has been shared, you simply log-in to the service and see who viewed the lesson, the number of questions they attempted, the answers they provided, in the case of multiple choice questions, even the incorrect responses; though it seems this last feature does require permissions from the student.

The LMS is Dead!

I for one have signed up to the service and will be staying in touch with developments and interested to see the uptake and use for this new and welcome initiative. One thing is for sure though, and that is competition is always good, at least that’s my view, so let’s sit back and see what happens in the coming months.
