Aha Moments in 2007

Tony Karrer

I wanted to go back and figure out what things really struck me during 2007. A purely virtual conference ( Free Online Conference - Corporate Learning: Trends) with amateur organizers, gorilla marketing through social networks, and a wiki for it's main page worked out pretty well.

Looking Back at 2007

Tony Karrer

In December 2006, I posted my challenges and predictions for 2007. Biggest challenges for 2007? I could answer this as the biggest challenges for Learning Professionals generally, and maybe I'll come back and do that, but for now, let me just write what I see as some of my bigger challenges in 2007. I found several very high quality developers at several levels in 2007. This continues to be a challenge, but I'm way ahead of where I was starting 2007.

Tony Bingham, President of ASTD, is doing his introduction, and his content is: Web 2.0, personal learning, easy distribution of software (software as a service), video is here now, push to pull, teaching Gen Y (what he calls the netGeneration). What a great setup for my presentation. Thanks Tony.

Buzz words for 2007

Learning with e's

Running under the title of Schott's Alamanac , the Times newspaper today carries an article about all of the new buzz words that have supposedly been introduced in 2007 and suggests that these are the words that will define the year. But some of them go back a few years, so although they may now define 2007, some may actually also define the first few years of this century, I think. Social Networking

Tony Karrer

I've run across a couple of interesting posts recently that seem to have spawned from a Business Week article - Scaling the Social Web. Hasn't eBay had social networking features for a long time? all have a social networking aspect to them? The point is that its probably natural for lots of sites to have social networking type features and functions for visitors. Quite simply, social networking sites require a high level of commitment.

Too Many Social Networks?

Tony Karrer

I just read David Warlicks' post - I Just Don't Get it Yet â€" Social Networks where he discusses his recent experience with several Ning generated social networks including: I've joined Library 2.0 , School 2.0 , and Classroom 2.0. I've tried out several social network tools and have had a similar reaction. I'm convinced there is something around social networks that will take off, but any network that is a closed system needs something as a hook to achieve critical mass.

Blogs as a Basis for Social Networks

Tony Karrer

DiSo (dee • zoh) is an umbrella project for a group of open source implementations of these distributed social networking concepts. or as Chris puts it : "to build a social network with its skin inside out". It appears to be heading in a good direction where you can have a distributed understanding of the social graph. Of course, this is early, but the general trend of seeing distributed, open social network solutions is encouraging

italki - Social Network for Language Learning

Tony Karrer

There are other resources, but the use of a social network to find people who can help each other learn the language is a great idea. italki is an interesting website in the language learning space - which seems to be very busy these days. They provide the ability to connect with other learners who are trying to learn a language. People find each other using the site and then connect via chat, IM, voice/Skype, etc.

Communities / Social Networking and LMS Merger

Tony Karrer

Mzinga is a merger of KnowledgePlanet (an LMS provider and also the maker of the eLearning simulation tool - Firefly) and Shared Insights - a community / business social networking software company. Risk of Identity Theft Due to Social Networking and Blogging

The more one you participate in blogs, discussions groups and other social networking tools, the more information there is about you in the world for anyone to access. The basic guidelines I have is not to put anything in my blog, on a social network, even when I register on a site (even when that site is supposed to keep the information private) that I wouldn't want to be public. I'm curious if anyone does believe that blogging, social networking, etc.
