The video seems less harsh when its seen in its original context, which is interspersed through episode 2 of Pure Pwnage. That said, Im a little concerned that the gamer mentality is sometimes presented as important to corporate culture and that as a result women should get into gaming. I play geography games, but Im not a gamer.

If I notice Im losing someones attention in class, Ill instantly make direct eye-contact, maybe raise an eyebrow, and start talking directly to that student, and most of the time. Im the same when teaching face-to-face -- big user of the laugh to create connection. There are many VoIP tools that allow sending video as well as audio.

In video games, players often have the option of going to a screen to see the objectives, goals, and tasks for a ceratin level and that doesnt diminish the experience of the game, just like a link to objectives wouldnt diminish the learning. Im not sure I suggested writing WIIFM learning objectives, but they probably have their uses.

I usually lunge for the mute button, but often I still have to wait for the now-silent narration to finish before Im allowed to move on. Im with you. Thats about all I knew of it.

Im not sure how this relates to danah boyds recent blog article on Viewing American class divisions through FaceBook and MySpace. Im a major geek, yet I avoid Second Life and continue to be skeptical about its use in elearning. I associate that style with video games and super-hero comics, which continue to be mostly "guy" things.

They often use slick video to show a concept while a voice-over explains everything, so the learners only role is to passively absorb. Im not saying to leave the info a mystery; Im saying that Ive seen a lot of elearning that seems to underestimate the intelligence of the learner and makes every little thing painfully explicit.
