Product Review – Articulate Storyline 2

Articulate Storyline 2. Transitions, Animations, Views –  I am fine using it once, but again, new product-new version, so why I am still seeing PowerPoint within this product to such a point, that TAV are exactly the same as in PPTArticulate and a few of the other big dogs are holding on to desktop for dear life. Hollywood is well known for making  sequels.  Love it.

wasn’t thunderstruck, but what I was surprised at was the number of folks who had or were about to purchase the well known authoring tools in the market, Articulate, Captive and Lectora. Articulate. Articulate Studio. I’ve always found this product to be the top of the line for PowerPoint to Flash course builds. Articulate loves to say that Engage is used often, but from folks I have spoken with who use the product, that doesn’t seem to be the case. The Cons – Articulate Studio. They were hungry to know more information. It was awesome.

I recently experimented with various methods of getting aPPT course developed with Articulate Presenter to the iPAD. HTML Articulate player from eLearning Enhanced: Works great. link] PPT2Video from Wondershare – strip out all the Articulate elements and insert audio on the page. Just wish they had a quiz component (it's in the works). link] Flash on iPAD from iSwifter– works ok. It executes the Flash content in its own data center and then sends video down the pipe to the user’s iPAD, which has to be connected to a Wi-Fi connection.

PowerPoint has a place in eLearning development. I’ve worked with hundreds of PPT files over the years, from standard presentations to pre-production storyboards to ILT conversion. Instructional Design : PPT can be a great storyboarding tool, helping develop the presentation and overall flow from one concept or process to the next. Styles : PPT offers many ‘styles’ for text content or you can create custom styles; either way, apply them consistently. PowerPoint still reigns –  If you are a course purist, the idea that PPT should be seen as an authoring tool should make you grumble with disgust. . recall a conversation I had last year with some folks from Articulate who informed me that PowerPoint is an authoring tool. Yes, you can use it for many different things, and yes, Microsoft has an add-on that turns PPT into something similar to Adobe Presenter. In the authoring tool world: PowerPoint focused authoring tool, Basically you know PPT, love it and want the ability to build within it and then convert your PPT to a Course. You have objects, elements, layers (in many cases) along with an option to go tree  or not, with some allowing the “slide” like view too; you can also create a course with PPT slides only, but that is not the ideal target. Over the weekend, I did one of the most stressing things there is to do in live. Yep, house hunting.  Where do you live? What amenities do you want or need? Beach?

Storyline2 by Articulate -The product has some pluses, but while it did a few nice things, I was wanting more. Feature wise it is top tier, but I see them in a confusion window – do we go for the beginners like Articulate or do we co intermediate/advanced or mix it all together? I’ll just say it right now, the industry as a whole isn’t doing much.  The new and cool.

For PPT lovers, you can synch video files with PPT with drag and drop. It enables you to upload PPT onto the iPad and present it to people – on the floor, at a location, etc. You can also connect the iPad PPT to a monitor and show it there.  – anything you can do with PPT, but it is seen on the iPad. They told me, that you cannot do this right now with any other other app, because you know that PPT does not work on the iPad. Unless you are aware that PPT can work on the iPad, you will believe their claims. Average. Really shocking.

Product Review: Microsoft Office Mix add-in for PowerPoint 2013

Some products including Articulate Studio and Storyline use the Microsoft SDK PowerPoint ribbon as their main ribbon. If you do not have PowerPoint 2013, sorry you are out of luck.  On the plus side if you have it, it will work with both 32 bit and PPT 2013 and 64 bit and PPT 2013. You can still add transitions and everything else that exists in PPT while creating your mix.

2014 Authoring Tools – State of Affairs

Use of PowerPoint in rapid content authoring tools – this has been a big irritant of mine, since the days when PPT first made its appearance in rapid content authoring tools.  Some vendors use chapter-page approach with PPT, but there are plenty who do not (why?). Studio always has done a great job with their PPT integration because they use the right terminology, and offer a TOC, offering non-linear for those that want it. Even with just content only – like PPT or video files. I’ve been reading a lot about the color green.  Right now, not amazed.
