My answer to theory or research is theory. For instance, the work on worked examples comes from John Sweller’s Cognitive Load theory. Theory generates experiments which refine theory. Theory generates experiments which refine theory. Researchers tend to run experiments driven by a theory.

In cognitive science, we separate out conation , intent or motivation (see also Self Determination Theory ), that is whether we are willing to expend effort towards something.

The power of emotion
