So there is certainly a kind of meta- communication online, similar to non-verbal communication that you can learn to read as facilitator. Learn to read digital meta - communication. But it could also be that you can see who is online ( for instance in Ning or Facebook you can see who is connected, or also on Skype ).

I actually think that Facebook and Ning are heading in the right direction by becoming platforms for social networking solutions. Facebook maybe represents a new way to stay in touch with folks, but it doesn't take much time and it really becomes a different way to email. Again, I'm not so sure I agree.
