There''s always a lot of talk in the L&D community and in businesses about how to meaningfully evaluate learning. For years the evaluation of learning in workplaces has been driven by the Kirkpatrick model and it''s 4 levels. But, the world of learning at work has changed. Ideas Learning' It''s just junk.

Learning & Design Thinking on Prezi. Too often L&D seems to be stuck in a box labelled 'Formal Learning'. I explained that this presentation is really two things, a summary of my own journey as my eyes were opened to the benefits of the design thinking process for learning. What does Design mean to you?

However the problem is that the title Instructional Designer feeds into the notion that learning happens in formal settings and that knowledge is something that can be transferred through instruction. We design so that people can do what they need and/or want to do more effectively. .

I'm also interested in how design thinking impacts upon learning and the use of visuals to communicate ideas and knowledge. My Top 25 Twitterers for Learning Not that easy to do I now realise!!

In this post I'll introduce you briefly to the tools and how I think they apply to learning design. My interest in it goes beyond this however, as I'm very interested in the design of different learning options/tools that better engage people and lead to more effective learning experiences.

Another year comes towards to an end and its been another year of great reading for anyone with an interest in learning. Once again I have read from a wide range of areas, all with something to add to how I think of learning. Businesses and indeed learning uses both these approaches, bonuses for performance, A+ for excellence etc.

Formal learning and informal learning. I get the idea here, there is learning that is structured and there is learning that happens outside of structured environments. Marcia Conner's explanation of informal learning is a good starting point in understanding the thinking underlying informal learning.

So here is the lesson in learning Business learning today is designed to fill a skills or knowledge 'gap', to provide workers with skills and knowledge required in today's business world. In other words, 'predictable' learning needs lead to formal learning solutions - problem solved! Learning for learning sake.

I was just reading comments from my post on Autonomous/Formal/Informal Learning and thought I'd put some of my thoughts down in a post as they come! A small box of formal learning and a larger box of informal learning exists within the circle that represents all activity within a workplace. Let's see how it goes?

Right now I'm reading an excellent book, The New Social Learning by Marcia Conner and Tony Bingham. In the case of formal learning events it is possible to still see the connection between learning and results. The link between learning and results becomes obvious in feast or famine scenarios.

Over the last few months I've read a number of blog posts about learning styles (see references at end of post). So, do learning styles exist? In recent times I've seen and heard much discussion around informal and social learning. For example, is informal learning necessarily social in nature? Has the rise of new technologies altered the traditional view of social learning? How can we harness new technologies to foster a culture of learning within our business?

I just twittered a thought - 'The benefit of Informal learning is that fish are the last to recognise water' - and then I started thinking. This is the real essence of informal learning. I've written previously about my use of the term 'Learning Design' rather than the more regular 'Instructional Design'. To me this put the learner at the centre of what I do, so therefore I am a person who DESIGNS learning. It is this gap that learning designers are seeking to bridge.
