Investing in Innovation: When it Pays to Play

You are a software provider, but you know you will never have the time to create every feature your customers might need, especially in the timeframe they want it. But you have other choices: typically, a company might partner with other providers, such that their customers can get the solutions they need – but you may not have too much influence over that partner’s roadmap or product direction. This is the road that software provider Cornerstone OnDemand (CSOD) is taking: the “something in the middle.” Here is an interesting proposition.

Cornerstone OnDemand. Oh, you can bulk upload – but that has to be done through Cornerstone – they will do it for you – for a fee.  IMO Cornerstone is more of a HCM (Human Capital Management) platform. If I was to compare the Big Dog Four – SuccessFactors, Saba, Cornerstone OnDemand and SumTotal by Skillsoft, Saba would win hands down.   I should note that Saba is another HCM possible player, and that the majority of their customers also buy two modules (learning and performance). Welcome, welcome all! Why am I so happy?  It is HR Tech.

I was talking with a startup that has an existing audience and now want to provide a monthly subscription for access to training to this audience. They will only convert a portion of the audience to the new service. The learners will get access to webinars, recorded webinars, videos, and other online content that they will author separately. They don't really have a tech team, so going with a hosted solution that would live at a subdomain would be best, i.e., subscribers would go to: learn.company.com in order to sign up, pay, and get access to webinars, content, etc.
