So, when I went and checked out Saba Social, Saba’s new social learning platform, I had very low expectations. Saba Social is a very solid product, that despite a few hiccups and “huh&# moments, achieves what it sets out to do, provide a user friendly social experience. I was surprised. You can compose a message, read, delete/trash, send, and add tags. Billing information, Messaging setup, Custom Themes/Branding – using their color picker for just about everything in the system – quite robust – another wonderful feature, e-commerce including if you wish to accept PayPal or not.

I always tell vendors that they are supposed to be the experts and not the people inquiring about the information. . They should know the key differences and benefits to virtual classrooms/webinars versus F2F/ILT, classroom based learning and it SHOULD NOT only be the savings in travel or productivity because they do not have to travel.

A good vendor will have what is sort of called a “sniffer&# , whereas the solution can identify whether it is a Blackberry or Iphone or whatever and automatically switch to the appropriate product. Dozens of LMS vendors, had typos on their web pages, zero screens of the system, links that went nowhere and two kicked up my Firewall warning of possible privacy collection and one had a Trojan Horse (I use a hardcore firewall and A/V). Based on my updated LMS directory of nearly 220 vendors, 15% offered a trial. Demo vs Trial.

Mzinga’s OmniSocial product sort of fits the build, but it lacks some components, to what I see as a true system, specifically 100% standalone, since it can also be integrated into a LMS or used in their own LMS. I will admit that the one of the best products I have seen this year, does what I am listing above - SCORM Cloud.

Just as in any industry there are people who lie or as we say “misrepresented” their product. I have run into the same issue – salespeople who say their product does A but in reality it does not. .
