| Page 1 of 35 | Previous | Next | KAPP NOTES FEBRUARY 23, 2012 Games Can Provide Authentic Experiences To provide effective instruction, it needs to be as authentic to the actual experience as possible. Most people do not work in a classroom (except teachers or trainers) so learning how to perform a task or negotiate an outcome in a classroom setting doesn’t always translate well to the work environment because of the disconnect between the environments. Gamification of context provides two key advantages. The context of an online course or the context of a classroom is not authentic. Sure, you may get a slightly lower score on your “final” but, really? | CLARK QUINN AUGUST 20, 2012 Coherent performance I’ve been revisiting performance support in preparation for the Guild’s Performance Support Symposium next month, and I’m seeing a connection between two models that really excite me. It’s abut how social and performance support are a natural connection. So, let’s start with a performance model. Here, the support we need differs. | | | | | | | CLARK QUINN JANUARY 6, 2012 Performance Architecture Yet the vision driving this is, to me, truly inspiring: augmenting our performance in the moment and developing us over time in a seamless way, not in an idiosyncratic and unaligned way. The performance model is wrong: it’s not all in the head, it’s distributed across tools and systems. I think it’s about a support system organized so that it recognizes what you’re trying to do, and provides possible help. It needs a new design that starts from the performance gap and looks at root causes. We also need to focus on the bigger picture. | SOCIAL LEARNING BLOG JULY 25, 2012 Front-End Analysis: Improving Performance As I am straddling the line between performance improvement and instructional design, I have been mulling over the use of Front-End Analysis and thinking about whether it would apply to the performance problems that we so often see associated with implementing ERP systems. The Human Performance Technology Model. Identify the performance gap. Cause analysis. Evaluation. | CLARK QUINN FEBRUARY 11, 2013 Performance support-ing learning In a post last week, I mentioned how Gloria Gery’s original vision of performance support not only was supposed to help you in the moment, it was also – at least in principle – of developing you over time. think of the typical GPS as one of the purest models of performance support: it knows where you’re trying to go (since you tell it), and it helps you every step of the way. This isn’t limited to GPS, this could be used in any instance of guided performance. And yet I have yet to see it. So what am I talking about? Let’s use an example. | SOCIAL LEARNING BLOG APRIL 18, 2012 Three (More) Keys to Better Performance Support It appears that more Learning & Development professionals are starting to value performance support as a critical component of any blended learning program. In my last post, I mentioned three things to keep in mind when considering performance support (PS). But those that do provide a wealth of valuable information. So, the really useful stuff is provided by other users. | | | | | | | | | -
SOCIAL LEARNING BLOG | SUNDAY, JANUARY 8, 2012 How to Improve Learning Outcomes With Performance Support Given that the goal of instructional designers and training developers is to improve employee performance, it’s surprising that many continue to create blended learning programs with little or no reliance on performance support tools or systems. Fortunately, performance support systems have received more attention in recent years, thanks to a broader trend toward informal learning strategies. Build performance support into every blended learning effort. Dr. Allison Rossett describes the value of performance support in her article Ode to Performance Support. MORE >> -
WIRED@HEART | TUESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2012 Rubrics for Assessments of Online Activities | Wired@Heart There are also some advantages for creating multiple choice exams: - they are relatively simple to put together (if done incorrectly:-) ) , - they provide immediate feedback, - they can be randomized to prevent plagiarism and cheating. Wikis, podcasts, interactive voice threads, e-portfolios, games and simulations, performance and product-based learning ,and many others have the potential to build more interactivity, engagement, collaboration, and autonomy; and they can be much more enjoyable to our learners. Evaluate learner performances with scoring tools such as rubrics. MORE >> -
INTEGRATED LEARNINGS | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 2012 Are You a Performance Consultant? We have been placed into a box that can be a real challenge to get out of, especially when it comes to moving into more of a performance consulting type of role. So…what is Performance Consulting, anyway? Here is an illustration to help clarify the concept of performance consulting. Training clients can tend to do the same thing – they jump to the solution (“training”) without investigating the various other factors that might be impacting the expected performance. The BEM provides six categories for investigating all of the factors impacting performance. MORE >> -
ABSORB LMS | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2012 How to Use a Learning Management System for Performance Support About a dozen years ago, learning and development professionals thought performance support was bigger than Tom Hanks , Meryl Streep , and The Beatles all rolled into one. Conferences about performance support were filled to capacity. Electronic performance support support systems (EPSS) were the rage. Performance support was so hot that some gurus and pundits predicted that courses were on their deathbeds. better strategy is simply to provide individuals with the information they need at the precise moment that they need to perform a task. ONLIGNMENT | SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 2012 Training that is centred on performance or on content – how to tell the difference. Calling the product “learning” instead of “training” or “instruction” does not make it performance-centred. This posting is a reminder of how to tell the difference between training that is focused on content, and training that is focused on learners and their performance. When used at all, tests are a basis for grading; that is to rank each learner by comparison with the performance of others. In performance-centred instruction: Objectives emerge from analysis of real world needs and describe intended results. MORE >>
