Design elements - a graphics style manual

Distribute light and dark like firecrackers and the rising sun : Above all, make distinctions between light and dark noticeable and clear. I love crossing into related disciplines and exploring the received wisdom. I'm obviously not a professional graphic designer but I am an enthusiastic amateur and keen to improve. With this in mind I enjoyed exploring Timothy Samara's sumptuous Design elements - a graphic style manual. In this posting I can't make available any of the examples to you - for those you'll have to buy the book; but I can share the rules. Use two typeface families maximum.OK,maybe

The Death of Training: Rumors Have Been Greatly Exaggerated
Living in Learning
AUGUST 8, 2009
Compare the earth to the sun and the earth is no longer the largest object. Open up the scope to include the sun and what we perceived as large is now small. Chances are good that I have contributed to those rumors, though not with an inkling of anything resembling malicious intent. Several of the professional groups I have joined through LinkedIn yield consistent discussion themes that register concern for the future of training. The concern comes from a cross-section of trainers, designers, training managers, and vendors. I agree, but only in part. Well…not so. We all are.

A: “Yeah, I mean, learning’s learning, and who needs to make a ‘social’ out of it? We’ve got courses, if they want to be social in the classroom, fine, but all this hype about social learning is just a way for consultants to try to sell old soda in new bottles.”. B: “So you think learning is about courses?”. A: “Sure. What else?”. B: “Well, let me defer that answer, and ask you another question.”.

The sun is streaming in through the windows and everyone is happy. Here I am in the idyllic surroundings of the Rookery Manor Hotel deep in the Somerset countryside.
