You may have heard the news last week that Articulate launched a new screencasting tool called Screenr. It is a free web-based tool that lets you create screencasts without installing any software. You can even watch the screencasts back at HD-quality and they look great. Screenr gives you multiple ways to use your screencasts.

It makes sense to have some ambient audio in decision-making scenarios, for example. One place where they work well is when I am doing quick screencast tutorials. However, I’d say there are thousands of other examples outside of e-learning, where multimedia effectively integrates audio into the experience.

A few weeks ago we launched Screenr, a free screencasting application that is easy to use and great for quick tutorials and elearning courses. In fact, on the Word of Mouth blog, we compiled over 100 rapid elearning tutorials that have been created with Screenr since its launch. An ideal screencast is 2-3 minutes.

One Acrobat.com service I thought about was having a light-weight version of Adobe Captivate as part of Acrobat.com that would enable customers to do simple screen recordings or even software simulations, that could be shared and posted everywhere, on YouTube for example, or even right on Acrobat.com somehow. The effect is easy enough to learn and practice in a few minutes. For example, you can combine it with the notebook template I shared a while back. Another challenge is that most screencasts are recorded at a higher resolution than used in the elearning courses. And any time you scale a screencast down you’ll run into some image degradation. Imagine being able to slide between an image of the rainforests 20 years ago and an image of what they’ll look like in another 20 years, for example.
