Last night the class ventured into VirtualU for a tour hosted by Jim and Steve Parker who have created a virtual platform build on Active Worlds. Gathering in the lobby before class starts. But there are many alternatives that are being deployed in a variety of applications.

Students in class explored the environment and checked out how it was set up. The class was then able to explore a show room and see how vendors could set up virtual exhibits. Jim told us that Digitell Live Streamed 10 sessions into the auditorium and had around 500 radiologists attend in the 3D platform.

Class visits the Holocaust Museum in Second Life. This class consisted of three different parts. The first part we visited the exhibit at the US Holocaust Museum. The interactive nature of the exhibit and the interactions of the avatars with the exhibit made it a great educational place to visit.

This week's class proved to be exciting as we got a guided tour of ProtoSphere from Erika of ProtonMedia , used the VOIP in Second Life and had a group challenge where teams of students (dressed as fire fighters) cleaned up make believe chemical spills in teams of 4 or 5. None of my students “hang out” in-world except for class activities, and my students rarely go into virtual worlds after the semester is over. In the physical world (real world), not many students hang out in my classroom when class is not in session! It seems that students find virtual worlds boring. Let me give you an example.
