2009 Top Posts and Topics: Kapp Notes
DECEMBER 4, 2009
The ASTD Big question this month is an annual question: What did you learn about learning in 2009? So one of the tasks I will do to answer this question is to see what posts were the Best of 2009 from several different sources. How Long Does It Take to Develop One Hour of E-Learning-Updated for 2009. So, I teamed with alumni Robyn Defelice at Dishing Design and updated the article for ASTD. The Metro DC ASTD chapter asked me to do an interview about audio in e-learning and I linked to the interview and shared some of my notes. Random Web 2.0 Bored?-Try

Great Year End ReCap
DECEMBER 28, 2009
One good site to check out is ASTD's Learning Circuits Blog Big Question for December. This time of year there are many recaps of blog postings and reflections on the "year in blogs." It contains a number of great postings about what bloggers have learned this year. Another great year end post was done by Zaid Ali Alsagoff over at ZaidLearn. He always does creative graphics and has created interesting and valuable assets for anyone looking to increase their knowledge or resources in the area of e-learning. Check out the year end post, The Very Best from ZaidLearn!
Audio in E-Learning
NOVEMBER 3, 2009
I recently had a discussion with Dan Bliton in his role at the Metro DC ASTD chapter about this topic, here is a small part of the interview. Audio is a powerful and impactful tool, but it is often used incorrectly within e-learning courses. A common question is "Should we have audio in the e-learning module that exactly matches the text on the screen?" The general answer is no. It’s not that you can’t learn from audio and text, it is just that the learning is more productive if the two are separate (audio that enhances what is on the screen not repeats it word-for-word).
Big News Out of ASTD International Conference & Expo 2014
MAY 12, 2014
This past week I had the privilege of attending my first ASTD (American Society for Training & Development) conference in Washington D.C. Brand new colors and signage trumpeted ASTD’s rebranding as “ATD”—the Association for Talent Development. One of the biggest announcements to come out of the conference, however, was not a new product or service. The Big Rebranding. Events

ASTD ICE 2009 -Impressions
JUNE 4, 2009
I’ll confess that I may not have been at the ASTD conference every day this past week, but I do have some impressions of the event I’d like to share. I was a little disappointed that ASTD decision makers, whoever you are, did not put the eLearning vendors together. ASTD is an interesting “club” of volunteers and staff with a somewhat bureaucratic culture. I made one of my conference goals to visit with prolific author Elaine Biech (Editor of the mammoth ASTD Handbook among her many titles), whom I hoped could show me the ropes. per day.

4 Simple Tips for Recording High-Quality Audio
JUNE 2, 2009
Tidbits: I’m at the ASTD 2009 International Conference & Exposition this week. Good audio is critical to your elearning success. You might be a great instructional designer and create the most engaging courses possible. But it all falls apart if the audio quality in your course is not very good. If you have the money, this is a viable option. Invest in a good quality microphone.

Build Branched E-Learning Scenarios in Three Simple Steps
JULY 14, 2009
This post is in response to some conversations I had during the last ASTD conference in Washington, DC. There were some people who suggested that rapid elearning was only good for basic linear courses and they lamented that they couldn’t build interactive scenarios. I added some tutorials at the bottom of the page that shows you how to do so. That’s pretty fast. I like to keep things simple.

Thoughts on ASTD
JUNE 7, 2009
This past week, I spent Monday and Tuesday at the ASTD International Conference & Expo in DC. Are Your E-Learning Courses Pushed or Pulled?
MAY 19, 2009
Tidbits: I’m trying something new for the ASTD 2009 International Conference & Exposition. Here’s the challenge for many of us. We want to make our courses engaging and interactive, yet sometimes the content or the time pressures of work don’t make that easy. The default position for many elearning courses is to merely push the information out to the learners. The Push Approach.

Karl: A recent (2008) ASTD/Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp) study revealed that more than 70 percent of the knowledge that employees acquire comes from informal learning experiences but that 78% of the companies allocate less than 10% of their budget for informal learning.
