The importance of synchronicity

Clive on Learning

On both occasions, the idea that most got me thinking was that 'synchronous is sovereign'. Having said that, I'm not convinced that synchronous events are all that exciting when the experience is no different from a recording. So, don't push the slider from all synchronous to all asynchronous - find the right balance.

Strategies for transformation 2: from synchronous to asynchronous

Clive on Learning

The second step on the route to transformation is a shift from interventions that are synchronous to those that are asynchronous. In case you''re not familiar with the jargon, ''synchronous'' learning activities happen in real-time - they are ''live''. Synchronous events also act as milestones in a blended solution.

Tips for blends 7: Keep a balance between the synchronous and asynchronous

Clive on Learning

Synchronous experiences, whether face-to-face, online or on the telephone, enrich a blend and provide it with momentum. But there’s something special about participating in a live event in the company of your peers. It focuses your energies and helps to ensure you keep up-to-date with your self-paced learning activities.

Synchronous e-learning myths #2: Classroom will always be best

Clive on Learning

Further evidence came from Matthew James and Dr Kathy Seddon from NCSL who presented on 'multi-layered synchronous learning'. Coming next: the myth that synchronous e-learning is essentially a 2D experience. Significantly, Illustra charge exactly the same for their online programme as they do for the face-to-face equivalent.

Well, because I couldn't have synchronous e-learning myths #2 and #3 but no #1. I must admit that, up until the event, I thought I had a pretty good handle on how to use virtual classrooms and other synchronous technologies successfully. Synchronous e-learning myths #3: Just more death by PowerPoint

Clive on Learning

I'd like to conclude my review of last Friday's eLearning Network Thinking Synch event by expressing my surprise at just how inventive people are becoming at using synchronous e-learning technologies. The videos Ron showed just blew me away - so much more realistic and flexible than classroom role plays.

The problem with pre-work

Clive on Learning

For some this failure has become such an obstacle that it threatens the whole basis of blended learning, which will typically mix asynchronous activities (which these trainers would categorise as 'pre-work' and 'post-work') alongside the synchronous (whether bricks-and-mortar classroom or its virtual equivalent).
