A recent survey that found that employees (in the UK, at least) are more interested in innovative learning and collaboration than the HR and training people in those same institutions. The study, conducted in March, found that 44% of employees want to see collaborative tools like blogs, forums and wikis developed, while just 32% of HR professionals agree. More HR professionals (42%) than employees (38%) wanted to see more classroom learning. Undirected learning is not a straight-line sort of process. What do you think?

This post continues my commentary to the Learning Insights 2012 Report produced by Kineo for e.learning age magazine. The second of the ten 'insights' in the report is that ‘L&D is playing a key role in supporting informal learning'. Informal learning is a broad term, covering everything from on-job instruction and coaching, through to the use of performance support materials, collaborative and experiential learning; anything, in fact, that doesn't come bundled up as a full-blown course. If this really is a trend, then it's a very important one.

As a result of using either a sophisticated Learning Management System or a simple spreadsheet, we know how to record the outcomes, assessment results etc of formal learning. We also know how to use those records for certification or qualification purposes. Learning records are included on our CVs and in this sense are somewhat precious.
