eLearning Startups - New Wave Coming

Tony Karrer

I'm not sure if other people are seeing this, but based on a bunch of conversations and calls, it appears that there is a wave of new startups being created right now and the trend is accelerating. Because of my background working with leading startups, e.g., eHarmony, MyShape, LoanToolbox, etc., my background in eLearning, and the fact that I'm a CTO-type person, I may get more of these kinds of calls, so I'm curious if other folks are seeing this as well.

Brand new theory: “The committee member life cycle”

From the Coleface

It is slightly tragic that I have spent much of my adult life on committees, from student societies to residents’ associations to industry bodies. As Athletic Union Chairman at the University of Bristol, I remember the extreme joy that was chairing/ sitting on 14 different committees. This experience has led to my new contribution to social science: “The committee member life cycle.” I hope one day this will be seen as the naughty little brother of the Forming, Storming, Normin

KM 2.0, Enterprise 2.0 & eLearning 2.0 Worlds Getting Closer

Tony Karrer

For a while, I've been trying to figure out how eLearning 2.0 relates to KM 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 - certainly there is a LOT of cross-over between what's being discussed. Well funny enough, it turns out that: DevLearn 2007 & KM World 2007 are both in San Jose, Nov. 6-8. Even both in the downtown area. Maybe we can recruit some of the KM bloggers who are attending to come join us for Beer and Bloggers on Nov. 7.

Well, it´s the final day of the ICL conference here in Villach, Austria. It´s clouding over again, and there is a rumour of rain. It pelted down last night, and I was glad that all the events, including the splendid conference dinner (sponsored by the Mayor of Villach, who failed to appear) were located in the same silubrious venue of the Congress Centre and Holiday Inn Complex.

Blogging a Conference

Tony Karrer

I just saw a blog that appears to have been created solely as a means to interact, capture thoughts and ideas during the Brandon Hall Innovations conference. It's a great way for folks not at the conference to have a sense of what's going on there. And, I bet it is a fantastic learning and networking experience for the blogger. Kudos to the BH folks for encouraging this even if there were issues.

First Post

eLearning Blender

Well here goes nothing. This is my first post on my first blog. Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking with Tony Karrer, and through this conversation I learned a couple of things in addition to some great information about LMS's. Outside of LMS's I learned how ignorant I am when it comes to Web 2.o and E-Learning 2.0, and I learned that there is a lot of advantages to poking around the internet as opposed to spending most of your time reading trade magazines.

User created content - back to learner control

Vignettes Learning

I just came in from Midhurst , West Sussex (old country), London. The place reminded me that humans have not changed through generations. People want to control things and their environment. While in flight, I finished reading Daniel Gilbert's book, "Stumbling on Happiness.” Gilbert is a Psychologist and Harvard professor. He says, to paraphrase, we want to control because it makes us feel safe and the process satisfies us.

I´m looking out over the river Drau, here in Villach, Austria. We´re in the Congress Centre for ICL 2007 - an impressive international conference focusing on all aspects of computer based/supported education and training. Villach is a beautiful little town in the South of Austria, and is nestled in between the mountains. Some of the papers so far have been challenging, others have been a little lacklustre, and one or two have been fairly dutiful in their presentation if not content.

Interview Questions

eLearning Blender

On Monday I will be helping to interview two applicants for a Software Developer position in my organization. It is important to me that the person selected has great communication skills because in my role I will be communicating with them frequently. I am basically the spokesperson for the application that they will be developing and it is my responsibility to filter and prioritize all feature requests and enhancements, so it is important that we can work well together.

Isolating Performance Content with "Application Points"

Vignettes Learning

To add to Clive Shepherd's 30-Minute Masters (Clive, Your Wiki is a great practice of user content sharing), there is a need to help trainers, SMEs , leaders, and speakers to isolate "Application Points" from a huge body of content. "Application Points" are those ideas that provide learners instant knowledge to meet working proficiency (not full proficiency) to help them do a task now, today.

Separated by a common language

Clive on Learning

As I prepare to spend my last night on the Catalan coast of France before crossing over to the Catalan coast of Spain, the issue of language is at the forefront of my mind. In France we do well because my wife, Sue, speaks a very passable French, but in Spain we will have to resort to pointing at things and hoping the locals speak English. Luckily, many do, at least in tourist spots, which is what most Brits (and Americans to be honest) rely upon.

Software Upgrade Training and Support

Tony Karrer

BJ Schone just posted a great question about a particular situation. They are upgrading their PeopleSoft implementation. He tells us: I don't know much about the new system, but I understand that it is quite an overhaul; one estimate said we would need 80+ hours of face-to-face training. However, due to logistics, time, and money, it appears we will be training about 80% of these employees using a combination of self-study eLearning courses and webinars.

Breakthrough eLearning

I just read a report that came out in June titled Laboratories of Reform: Virtual High Schools and Innovation in Public Education. Published by the Education Sector, an independent education think tank in Washington, the paper provides an overview of online education at the high school level across the United States. Not surprisingly, the results are mixed; some jurisdictions are doing a fine job of providing alternative access to secondary education, and in others the quality is just not up to

Xerceo is a new WIKI that just hit my inbox. So, I've had no time to use it and therefore this is NOT a review. Its the concept that interests me. I've been thinking about this type of editable "course" ever since my first introduction to wikis. However, its been a tough nut to crack. I am happy to see that someone has taken the first shot at a commercial product to do this.

How Valid are Research Results? And What to Do

Tony Karrer

Based on my post - LMS Satisfaction Features and Barriers - I received some feedback that the numbers didn't correspond to what other research has shown. As a case in point, in my post I said: To me, it's interesting to see news like CornerStone OnDemand Raises $32M - Sept. 17 2007 - when their satisfaction score is being reported so low. That seems like a disconnect.

The Learning Circuits

Can one create a great educational simulation around ethics? One should be able to in theory. One point of Sim is to make an experience that allows people to see the consequences of their Actions in a safe environment. If you made a pure "ethics" sim, however, then of course students would just always "do the right thing." It would be as useful as the official Enron Ethics Handbook.
