DVDs store and play movies. As long as you have a working DVD player, you can watch it. In that respect, the LMS is the DVD player. It’s the system that reads the information on the DVD and shows it to the viewer as a movie. Or in this case, it reads the eLearning information and shows it as a course someone can take.

And, of course, I understand that the overhead would make them useful only in particular situations. And, of course, I made a diagram. Of course, it doesn’t have to be tuned to the experience of a game, it can just be a scenario, but you know I’m not going to stop there! :). And I reckon those are few.

But you need to make sure your eLearning courses are SCORM compliant; else, your development efforts will go vain. Basically, a SCORM compliant eLearning course can be hosted on a LMS that follows the SCORM standard. . SCORM compliant courses can be developed using eLearning authoring tools and publishing the course to SCORM.

You might catch someone using the terms “instructional design” and “instructional development” interchangeably, and at first glance, they do seem pretty similar. However, if eLearning were like movie making, using these words interchangeably would be like confusing the screenwriter with the director, and vice versa.

Clark mentions that whatever it is we want to design, be it courses, games, interactivities, or stories, we should find the inspiration for it by watching more movies, reading more stories, playing more games, visiting amusement parks, etc. Determine the traits and quirks of the role that excite/relate to the audience.
