Members of a learning community must have a desire to network, collaborate, and share information or the community will not thrive and will not drive business value. Some research findings and “experts” suggest that rewarding community members for meeting networking, collaboration, and information sharing targets (or punishing them for failing to meet such targets) is detrimental to quality, motivation, and attitudes. Learning or professional communities are “healthy” and beneficial to the organization when its members are intrinsically motivated to participate and contribute. What

Do the graduates of traditional universities know how to continuously learn and are they capable of collaborative and interactive working behaviours? In a recent CLO article written by Craig Mindrum, it is said that the most prevalent model for adult education is the corporate university – in terms of practical educational effectiveness. The article suggests that the corporate university has moved streets ahead of the traditional university.

Wiki sites, because they involve collaborative work, will suggest not only how much each contributor knows, but also how eager they are to share that knowledge and how well they work with others.
Why is it so difficult to quickly find someone in my organization to answer a pressing question, provide advice about a procedure, explain how to use some software, or tell me where to find an expert, course, or document?

In fact, I would argue that training or education developed in an open source (or collaborative) manner is more likely to be more effective, more accurate, and of higher quality as compared to “materials” developed in the “traditional” manner.
What would you say if I told you that I know where you can find some FREE , HIGH QUALITY , and REUSABLE courses, modules, and lesson plans? I I guess your answer depends on who you are. A

“During this time of economic upheaval, when every dollar counts and effective decision-making is crucial, new technologies such as social media tools can help oil and gas industry professionals find information, collaborate and generally be more productive,” Ali Faramawy, vice-president, Microsoft International said.

Old ways of measuring the productivity and success of a learning community were appropriate for traditional, linear kinds of training, but not for more advanced, collaborative (or social) learning environments.
Organizations are either actively considering or have recently started deploying enterprise social media to enable social learning. Such Such companies have come to realize that key to their success are productive and vibrant learning communities.

BT was most intrigued by the Podcasting Kit for SharePoint solution that runs on Microsoft SharePoint as it would leverage existing technologies and investments, align with BT’s knowledge management and collaboration strategies, and address the key challenges and goals expressed by the BT Learning Council.
Follow this link to read about BT’s experience with social learning. Yours truly Yours truly was involved with this project - read my quote in the case study. Peter

I was reading a report (Horizon 2009) and found three trends affecting the practice of learning and collaboration that I thought was worth sharing.
Increasing globalization continues to affect the way we work, collaborate, and communicate . Information technologies are having a significant impact on how people work, play, gain information, and collaborate . Increasingly, those who use technology in ways that expand their global connections a re more likely to advance , while those who do not will find themselves on the sidelines. With the growing availability

Online collaboration?
Sounds sort of stinky, doesn’t it?
Well, according to the results of a broad-reaching survey done by Allison Rossett, professor emerita of educational technology at San Diego State University, and James Marshall, consultant and educational technology faculty member at SDSU, current elearning is a combination of old and new — but mostly old.
The research is “broad-reaching” because five groups invited members to participate in the survey — groups that include

As I mentioned in Real-Time Collaborative Editing , I had a fantastic experience participating in group editing of a Mind Map of collaborative tools during a session at Learn Trends. I would expect the document to continue to grow and change, but thought it would be worth having it available in a text format as well (so I can find it when I need it). In other words - How do we collaborate together in remote work teams to be as effective or even more effective than a team that works down the hall? Let me admit that I'm likely in over my head when talking about methods and tools for collaboration. At the core, when I look at what a team needs, it's a pretty simple list: Real-time Voice Screen Sharing Document Editing (sometimes) Asynchronous Share / collaborate My primary interest here are the methods and tools that allow us to work better as part of remote work teams. I cannot claim to be an expert, and I feel like

I’ve been slicing and dicing our Authoring Tool KnowledgeBase and doing some online research in response to a question about collaborative rapid authoring tools that developers in multiple locations can use. Collaborative across locations = Server-based authoring environment that one or more content developers access simultaneously using their browser for collaborative authoring.
Thought I’d share what I found for three reasons - (1) hopefully to provide some valuable information, (2) to see who I may have missed so I can add them and/or get them added to our KnowledgeBase (3) to let you know about the type of client-driven research we do at Brandon Hall Research.

We might want to think that technology is changing the way we collaborate and yes that's true! Managers are starting to think differently, staff definitely has a mind of their own and are more empowered each day and the focus on collaboration is much more than we saw even 3-4 years back. Most firms worth their name have some sort of collaborative document management system in place. There's a shift happening and its all around us. We may not be a part of that shift yet, but I'm sure each one of us will soon be.
