The grinning woman eating a salad; the perfectly multicultural meeting; the man with a headset: these are the standards for stock photography. And while it definitely has its place, stock photography isn’t the gold standard when it comes to learning. Learners can sense stock photography from a mile away.

But in more cases than not, visuals are a necessary ingredient, because words alone just wouldn't do the job. That's when I turn to clip art and stock photography. And there's a lot of poor clip art and stock photography out there which is horribly cheesy and, worse still, over-used. What's so wrong about that?

Get rid of the stock images. We are all guilty of over-use of stock images, and as a web visitor – do they really grab your attention? Higher Logic (below) does a good job of enhancing their current images by adding their tagline in large, bold type. Use large type to stand out, replace images with bold, emotion enhancing type.
