It was first proposed by Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger as a model of learning in among group of people who share a craft and/or a profession, i.e., a community of practice.The basic tenet of the theory is that abstract knowledge usually given in the classroom is harder to retain. Of the companies I’ve worked for or currently consult with, very few have a robust Knowledge Management System (KMS) where those with the knowledge can easily share that knowledge with others.

Some ideas include creating knowledge bases by building networks (e.g. a Ning network), using wikis and blogs. This allows for peer review and knowledge sharing which is searchable by topic. Encourage content creation and reward people for sharing their knowledge, successes and failures.
