eLearning Cyclops: The Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center

eLearning Cyclops

The Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center. Last week, I had the pleasure of touring the Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center. This is a training center that uses numerous types of simulations - everything from live actors to mannequin and online sims. Simulation Centers observation area for proctors. Jeff Goldman.

Simulations - Considerations

eLearning Cyclops

Currently, I am involved in creating simulations for a new system application. To avoid the problems I encountered in the past, I strongly suggest making the following considerations prior to developing software or system application simulations. Can dummy data be added for the sake of the simulation?

This simulator, which included an electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) and a labor and delivery room, allows one to view and hear the learner via video embedded in sim (see pic below). What impressed me the most was use of video embedded in the interface.

What I Ask During a Course Review

eLearning Cyclops

Simulations/Interactivity Are the soft skill simulations reflective of realistic scenarios? Do the simulations, interactive exercises and/or pop-ups function properly? Are the software simulations/demonstrations realistic and appear to reflect the actual “live” system? Was text in the animation clear and visible?

link] They are creating "immersive cultural simulation" programs, which uses realistic video created in California, but also combines it with actual footage from Iraq. I would think this is extremely important when it comes to cultural sensitivity, which they are using the simulations for.

Adobe Flash - creating interactive elements, including animation, games, immersive learning simulations, etc. Adobe Captivate - creating simulations (software sims and occasionally soft skill, branching sims). Adobe Fireworks - editing graphics. Sumtotal LCMS - already determined by the company I work for, but no complaints.

Almost every course involved using Flash for interactive elements (animations, games, quizzes, simulations, video, etc.). I will note that I will keep Captivate in my toolbox , as it is more effective for developing software/application simulations than building them from scratch in Flash.
