So putting constraints on the task and/or the environment can support making exploration more effective. Many years ago, Wallace Feurzig argued for guided exploration, as opposed to free search (the straw man used to discount constructivist approaches). Exploration also drives informal learning.

It’s about recognizing a) that there aren’t necessarily folks who have this as a job, and b) it interferes with innocent others, and c) therefore it undermines a pleasant environment. I suggest it has to do with creating an environment in which people can work together for organizational success in an optimal way.

Wisdom into practice

We should, first, care about creating an environment where people can not just survive, but thrive. This goes beyond just learning design, of course, and it should go into our performance support (e.g. job aid) design, task design, and informal learning as well. In a broader sense, it’s also about values. What do we care about?
